Settled near the river Deveron, on the border of the Speyside area, the Macduff distillery has been created by the Glen Deveron Distillers Ltd in 1962. It has been sold 12 years later to the Bacardi group.
During its short history, the Macduff distillery has had several alterations, in order to test different distillation techniques.
Macduff was the first of all distilleries in Scotland to experiment metal mashtuns, and it was also the first one to use steam to heat the stills.

Old Rhosdhu is produced at Loch Lomond Distillery, along with Inchmurrin single malt. It is a relatively new, and thus rather rare malt, until recently. The first production of this malt took place in the mid-1960s and has been bottled for general distribution only in the last few years. The distillery is located in Dumbartonshire and actually sits astride the Highlands/Lowlands boundary line. It is classified as a Highland, however, since it gets its water from Loch Lomond, which is in the Highlands.
Tasting Notes:
Appearance: Deep amber, red gold (with a slight pink hue)
Nose: Medium to high intensity and complexity. Dry with a hint of sea air
Taste: Dry, medium bodied and smooth with
a clean, dry finish: faintly salty with a slight sherry note
"An unequivocally vivid and evocative maritime-influenced dram, a malt that could only be produced in this exceptional geographical location"
Oddbins Malt Whisky 2001 Brochure.
A 10-year-old bottling from this New Zealand distillery was quite pleasant. A white wine color with a touch of gold, the nose had an immediate bourbon presence, followed by a dusty, cereal grain aroma with floral and herbal notes. The palate was rather flat, sweet at first, then falling off to a long dry finish. I'll look forward to an older expression in the future.
