Caol Ila 12 year

The Caol Ila distillery was build by Hector Henderson in 1846. At this time, Henderson was also the owner of the Littlemill Lowland distillery.
Before the construction of a distillery, the place was used for washing lead ore.
In 1863, Hector Henderson sold his distillery to Bulloch Lade, owner of the Loch Catrine distillery in Glasgow.
The pier was built in those times, in order to facilitate ship transport of coal and barley to the distillery, and whisky casks from the distillery.

The distillery was sold to the Bloch brothers, owners of Glen Scotia in Campbeltown in 1936.
In 1954 Hiram Walker bought the distillery and he added amongst other things a Lomond still.

Cragganmore 12 year

The Cragganmore distillery was founded by John Smith in 1869. Smith chose the place for the quality of the water of the Craggan burn, but also because it was closed to the Strathspey railway. John Smith really liked trains and used to travel by rail. However is was often forced to travel in goods wagons, because of his weight of about 144 kg. The cabins in the voyagers wagon were merely to narrow for him.

Littlemill 8 year

Although built in the middle of the 18th century it was probably better known at that time as a brewery. By the 1820s, however, it is known to have been distilling 20,000 gallons annually and - with the exception of a two-year closure after the 1929 crash - it has never looked back. Again, like some other whiskies classified as Lowland malts, Littlemill takes its water and peat from above the imaginary Highland line, Nearby are the remains of a very real line from earlier centuries - the western end of the Antonine Wall, built by the Romans to contain the Pictish tribesmen to the north.

Glenkinchie 10 year

Glenkinchie lies, as the name might suggest, in a glen of the Kinchie Burn near the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian. It is situated about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The distillery is set in farmland. The name 'Kinchie' is a corruption of 'De Quincy', the original owners of the land. Its origins date back to around 1825 when it was founded by brothers John and George Rate. The original name was Milton Distillery. The brothers probably renamed it in about 1837. In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors were turned into a museum of malt whisky.

TASTING NOTES:
Nose
Excellent complexity with diced carrots adding to the earthy, salady aroma. Some sweetness but drier than usual.
Palate
Fruity, grapey and beautifully mouthwatering: quite different from the nose. Brilliant sub-strata of peat runs throughout and adds a luscious sweetness to compliment the sultanas and spice.
Finish
Smoky and dries rapidly to allow in a cocoa effect.
Comment
A disarming malt that exudes sheer class.
